Agide’s enduring magic

Time and the ever-changing music industry dynamics appear to be having no effect on seasoned artist Gidess Chalamanda’s career. If anything, these forces have made his star shine even brighter.

The veteran artist, thought to be in his mid-90s, continues to catch the eye of event organisers, corporates and headlines shows both at home and abroad.

Still going strong: Chalamanda

His collaboration with Patience Namadingo on Linny Hoo over a year ago, arguably rejuvenated his relevance.

Since then, the ageless singer and composer has enjoyed support from all and sundry. Over the weekend, Mzuzu-based furniture brand BM Sofa Designers became the latest entity to join the bandwagon of Chalamanda’s benefactors.

The company donated a sofa set worth K1.2 million to the artist at the weekend, a move that delighted the artist.

In an interview, Chalamanda said good character is an investment and good things often follow. He said he feels indebted to all who continue to support his art and well-being.

Answering how ‘Agide’ has managed to maintain his relevance in the game past his generation, arts commentator Sam Chibaka said Chalamanda has benefitted for being real and true to his artistic values.

Chibaka said unlike other artists, Chalamanda has placed trust on his musical prowess and composition than using other means to gain relevance in the industry.

“In an era where most artists have used scandals to remain relevant, Chalamanda has done the opposite. He has let his music to do the talking. And he is an artist who can perform alongside everyone. That is a rare quality for a veteran such as him in this era,” he said.

University of Malawi associate professor of media communication and cultural studies Anthony Gunde said the artist has managed to gain a fresh appeal due to collaborations.

“His work with other artists who do other genres has allowed his work to remain in tandem with contemporary trends.

“Other artists can learn from him by avoding staying in a cocoon of previous popularity by exploring other facets of their art,” Gunde said.

Speaking of the recent donation, BM Sofa Designers managing director Peter Kasewe said the gift was a show of appreciation for Chalamanda’s  music and his continued relevance despite his old age.

He said: “What stands out more is his hardwork and relevance in the music industry. We hope this donation will give him energy to bring new ideas knowing that he is loved and appreciated by many.”

Among the other suppport initiatives that Chalamanda has enjoyed is a grocery shop that was built and stocked by FDH Bank plc two years ago.
